Limoux Winter Carnival

Limoux hosts the longest winter carnival in Europe, which runs weekends from January to two weeks before Easter.

Spectators gather in the town square 3 times each day: from 11 am to 10 pm, to follow the procession from restaurant to restaurant. Masked Pierrots lead the musicians, while they dance rhythmically in time to the music, delicately moving their long springy wands over their heads. This rhythmic dance is the Fécos.

Through the fun and games of the carnival there is a reminder that this is the area where the Cathars flourished, where the medieval Inquisition was created by Saint Dominic's Dominican friars, and where countless people were burned alive for the crime of choosing their own form of religious belief.

Limoux is the perfect location from which to explore southern France, Northern Spain, and the Mediterranean. All major destinations (and those waiting to be discovered!) are within easy reach.
